A while ago, I was sitting in a friend’s living room, we were about to go out and grab lunch when I asked if I could borrow a brow pencil. “Oh, I don’t have any makeup” she answered.
“What?” I asked looking at her. “I don’t have any makeup” she answered, “is that weird?” No, I didn’t think it was weird, I actually thought it was kind of cool. I don’t really know why I was so surprised at the fact that a girl in her mid twenties has never worn, or even tried wearing makeup. The funny thing is, I’ve never noticed.
Fast-forward to a few weeks ago, I get a txt from her, asking why I’ve never told her about foundation. I asked what she meant and she told me that she had her makeup done, for the first time ever, by another friend who’s a MUA. She kept telling me all about how glowing and even her skin looks. I told her to be careful- she might have started a dangerous love affair with makeup products, one that might cost her a pretty penny.
I obviously love makeup- duh!– but it doesn’t mean I wear it every single day. I don’t really think of makeup as a “must”. Is it a hobby? Maybe, although it feels a little bit more than just that. Let’s just say that while my husband likes to spend his money on sports memorabilia, I like to spend mine on makeup. A lot of people think that makeup is about “covering” yourself up. Some say that people who wear makeup are insecure or afraid to go out bare-faced. While I know that this may be the case for some (as it was for me too, at one point when my acne was at its worse), I think that most of us do it, because we like it- not because we feel that we “have” to. What do you guys think?
If you don’t like wearing a lot makeup, but still like to wear some, stick to light bases that won’t feel heavy on your skin. A light base and a little mascara is all I feel like using on some days. L’Oreal’s True Match is one of the best drugstore foundation that has a very natural finish and a thin formula. Guerlain’s Meteorites Baby Glow is another very light base that won’t leave you looking and feeling like you’re wearing too much makeup. IT Cosmetics Anti-Aging Armour Super Smart Skin-Perfecting Beauty Fluid SPF50+ will give your skin minimal coverage, while feeling lightweight (it works nicely when used under foundation, too, but might not be the best for anyone who’s fair-skinned).
A lot of volumizing mascaras can get clumpy- when trying a mascara go for something that gives a very natural look- like Maybelline’s Great Lash or something that will separate them nicely and won’t feel heavy- like Maybelline’s Push Up Falsies Angel.
UD’s Naked Basics is a great little palette that has everything you need to delicately define your eyes (their Naked concealer can also be your best friend- it’s very lightweight and has a natural finish). I also love Cork, Wedge and Brule singles from MAC.
Laura Mercier’s Translucent Powder is one of my favorite products and it’s great to use for mattifying your skin slightly, even if not wearing any foundation. Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette is also great for anyone who prefers a natural-looking glow. These powders won’t look shimmery or give you that over-the-top highlight look. Instead, they’ll diffuse light and enhance your natural complexion. Add some lip balm or a sheer lippie and you’re good to go.
MAC Cork, Wedge, Brule, UD Naked Concealer in Light Warm, Givenchy Rose Caprice and IT Cosmetics Beauty Fluid.
Do you remember your first makeup experience? I remember like it was yesterday, when one of my mom’s friends showed me how to use a lip liner. She used to just use a nude liner with a little lip balm and I thought it was the coolest thing, ever. :) I think at one point, I tried recreating that “look” with a coloring pencil.

October 17, 2016 at 4:31 pmI have to admit I really enjoyed reading this post!
I think makeup could be great to generally improve your look and boost up your confidence, personally I mostly go for a natural look (even when I feel like I’m piling up the makeup, the end result doesn’t look like it) and most days I wear no makeup at all, but it sure makes me feel better when I do. :)

October 17, 2016 at 4:50 pmThank you! I love natural makeup looks, too! Once in a while I’ll go all out with a heavy look, sometimes I don’t wear any at all- it depends on my mood or plans for the day. It’s definitely great for a quick confidence boost once in a while, but that’s not to say that it’s necessary! :) Thanks for stopping by! x

October 17, 2016 at 5:02 pmI love make up but I don’t wear it every day either, I know how bad it can be for my skin so I try to avoid skin make up unless it’s a special occasion!
I remember when I started using make up, I thought I knew how to use an eyeliner… judging by all the photos on my Facebook, I didn’t. hahah x

October 17, 2016 at 6:27 pmI love this post, Paula! I don’t think woman who doesn’t wear makeup as weird, it’s definitely their choice. Sometimes, I actually adore their simplicity. My first makeup was a bb cream, it’s horribly grayish but I was too excited to have my first makeup to really care.

October 17, 2016 at 8:34 pmOne of your best posts…I have some of these products and I love the Hourglass Ambient Lighting. I love products, trying new things, experimenting with different looks. I believe in choices for women (okay, I’m on my soapbox). Going natural is great, so it’s piling it on. And it’s cool we can use products such as the ones you suggested to let us pull off a very minimal look even while needing the extra help! Thank you, Paula! :)

October 18, 2016 at 10:13 amAw no way, thanks Jane! :) The Hourglass powders are so lovely, I really like that they’re not over-the-top. I love trying new products too and experimenting with different looks- it’s just so fun!

October 17, 2016 at 9:01 pmI used to LOVE experimenting with all sorts of different looks but now I guess I’m locked in to what I like. I’ve recently just been enjoying wearing concealer with a powder foundation and a couple other face products. And I love NOT wearing makeup. I just hate that my eyelashes are so light. I” trying that Rommel mascara that’s supposed to tint them so fingers crossed! As for my first true makeup experience, my best friend’s mom growing up was obsessed with clowns. We took her red lipstick and covered our entire face with it to try to look like clowns ?? Needless to say that was fun trying to get it off!

October 18, 2016 at 10:15 amWhen I get home from work one of the first things I do is take my makeup off. I love makeup but I can’t stand to wear it around the house when I’m cooking or cleaning haha :) Oh I just saw a commercial for that mascara, let me know what you think after you try it!
Haha omg that’s hilarious! Removing it must have been a nightmare!

October 17, 2016 at 10:04 pmLove this! I don’t wear much makeup and don’t mind going out without it, even without perfectly clear skin. I remember using that awful Maybelline whipped dream foundation, I don’t remember exactly what it was called but it would just look caked on. So bad!

October 18, 2016 at 7:38 amI do my best to avoid wearing make up as much as possible – only when I am going out to someplace fancy or I know I’ll have photos taken of me. Unless it is fancy dress make up. Then I am all. over. it.

October 18, 2016 at 8:57 amHell yeah I wear it because I like it. I am not obligated to put jack shit on my face, and truthfully I often don’t, but I genuinely like a little face makeup and eyeliner. When I don’t feel like wearing it, I simply don’t.
That said, I totally do remember my first experience with makeup. My mom took me to Merle Norman and had a pro show me how to apply basic foundation, blush, and mascara. So yeah, I might have been taken to an old lady shop and didn’t discover trendier brands for a while, at least I never had the orange Cover Girl line on my jaw!

October 19, 2016 at 11:57 amPersonally, I’m a make up addict and wear it almost every day, at least 90% of the time.. I do love being fresh faced, but to me the application process and playing with products and colors is simply fun and wonderful. I guess you could say it’s my hobby? No make up make up look is still one of my favourites. <3
