Nighttime beauty mistakes you might be guilty of

Do you use the same towel to dry both your body and your face?

Having acne prone skin means that I have to be very careful at keeping my skin in check. Slightest change in my diet (damn you dairy!) or sleep cycle, immediately shows on my skin. Over the last couple of years I discovered that even smallest change in my routine can make a big difference in my skin’s appearance (like using a dye and fragrance-free detergent for instance!). Here are a few nighttime beauty mistakes you might be guilty of..

YOU DON’T TAKE YOUR MAKEUP OFF

Okay, so I never actually went to sleep with my makeup on, and I’m sure you know that you should wash your makeup off before going to bed. But what about those days when you’re too exhausted to even think about it? I personally cannot imagine going to sleep with my makeup on (even back in my college days when I’d go out and get home at 3 am first thing I’d do when I got home was throughly wash my face). Makeup holds onto oil, dirt and dead skin cells- all of which can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Eyeliner and mascara can also cause your eyes to get red and irritated, not to mention that all of that makeup easily transfers to your pillow cases and bed sheets!

YOU DON’T WASH YOUR PILLOW CASES OFTEN ENOUGH

Yes, your pillow case might cause breakouts. Let me tell you, this made a huge difference in my skin. Oil and dirt can easily build up on your pillow case (just think about the environment, your hair and your skin constantly touching it) and it can then be transferred back to your skin. Not everyone skin is the same and your might not be acne-prone or as sensitive, but if you do suffer from acne, it’s best to sleep on a pillow case that’s made out of natural fabrics. I change mine every 3-4 days- that way I’m not sleeping on a pillow case that has several days worth of oil and other residue (like hair product) on it. I also noticed a big difference when I switched to fragrance and dye-free detergent.

NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP

You’ve probably heard all about the recommended 8 hours of sleep, but I really think that it’s an individual matter- as long as you feel well-rested when you wake up, 6 or 7 hour should be enough. When you don’t get enough sleep your skin starts to look dull, your eyes look red and puffy, as your skin doesn’t get to regenerate.

TIGHT HAIRSTYLES

If you put your hair in a tight hairstyle like a bun or a pony tail, our hair will be more prone to failing out. Instead, try putting it in a lose braid and let your hair cuticles rest. This will also stop those awkward pony tail dents/kinks from forming.

FORGETTING TO MOISTURIZE

Don’t be afraid of using thicker, richer moisturizer formulas during nighttime- even if you have oily skin. As you sleep, your skin regenerates itself, your body takes the time to repair damages and rectify itself. Think of a night cream as “food” for your skin, which is necessary for those new skin cells.

NOT WASHING YOUR TOWELS/WASH CLOTHS OFTEN ENOUGH

This goes back to the same thing as with the pillow cases. Make sure to use a separate towel for your face- especially if you’re acne-prone, since the skin on your face is a lot more sensitive than that on your body. If you use wash cloths, it’s best to use a new one every day. I buy mine on amazon right here (24 pack for only $14.00 which means that I have no problem with using a new, fresh one every day).

Lately I’ve been guilty of not getting enough sleep and not using night time moisturisers (oops!). It’s getting really hot in Australia and at night I’ve just been loving cleansing my face and leaving it at that because it just feels so fresh!

Maybe try a lightweight oil instead? I love using those on my face in place of moisturizer during hot weather. :)

For sure the tight hairstyles is my mistake. I really need to practice more less aggressive daily hairstyles than my messy bun lol. The braid is a good start!

I used to put mine up in a tight ballerina bun and my hair was falling out like crazy. haha :) Messy bun is okay though, as long as it’s not too tight :)

Trust me, I know the struggle haha my hair is very long and I have to tie it down, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to sleep :D As long as it’s not too tight of a hair style, it shouldn’t be a problem ;)

Yes, I often forget to moisturize, bloody forgetfulness on my part. I’m so glad you made me even more guilty, hehe! Now, I’ll definitely be more regular in moisturizing my face.

Mine would be using the same towel for your body and face. I’ll be sure to pull out a face washer or hand towel tonight to start using.

I think I should change my bedding more often. I try to be very good about it and change it at least every two weeks, but maybe that isn’t enough.

Apart from not getting enough sleep I think I’m pretty good with my night time beauty routine :) I use face cloths for my face, have tons of them as they’re really cheap and take fresh one very day. Try to change my bedding once a week, always take off my makeup, cleanse my face and moisturise :) x

Guilty of tight hairstyle because of ballet class. But I’ve been making a point to never wear my hair tight when I am not in class/teaching class.

My hair used to fall out like crazy because I always slept in a tight bun, definitely noticed a big difference when I started braiding it. :)

So I’m always really good at taking my makeup off for bed, but lately I have been extremely lazy when it comes to taking off my mascara – for whatever reason! I did just get a new silk pillowcase and it has definitely helped my hair. Plus I’ve heard they are actually better for your skin :)

Not getting enough sleep is my worst one as I usually function well on just 5/6 hours but I know it’s not enough. I’m also bad with my hair wearing it up all the time, which sometimes causes that horrible scalp pain/discomfort x

Same here! I find that 5-6 hours is enough for me. If I sleep for longer, I’m just way too tired the next day. I don’t even like sleeping in during the weekend. That’s why I think it’s a bit of an individual matter :)

Ok guilty as charged with the pillow cases. One thing I can say I do is never dry my face after washing it with a towel. I use a fresh Viva paper towel. Learned that trick from my aunt who has flawless skin!

Do you ever get to catch up with your sleep during the weekend? I think that as long as you feel well-rested in the morning, it doesn’t matter too much. I can’t sleep for 8 house, it’s too much for me hah :)

I am very guilty of not getting enough sleep. It’s so ridiculous and I am so shocked I don’t have eye bags as heavy as luggages by now. I do make an effort but too many things are currently distracting me but it’s gradual baby steps…Thanks for sharing…xx

I’m guilty (such a heavy word haha) of sleeping with a ponytail/bun but I really don’t like having hair in my neck when I’m sleeping so with a loose braid I’d have that but I need to think of other options ’cause my hair thinks it’s fall all year, seriously it’s insane how much hair I lose and that I still have some left?! But lately it’s pretty noticeable so I’m going to start taking vitamins as well.
I have lots of acne (well, I don’t know if you call black spots acne?) during my period and ovulation, do you know a good product against blackheads? They’re mostly on the sides of my chin. Thanks in advance!

PS : do you have a post or post coming up on how to clean your face properly before going to bed?
PPS : I’ve just turned 22 and I’ve read that you should start using anti-aging cream in your early twenties, of course one adapted to your age. Do you agree and if yes, do you have a suggestion? :)

Sorry for all the questions, they just all popped into my head haha!

I don’t but I can work on one for you if you’d like! ;) You’re very young so there’s no wrinkles to treat but the best thing that you can do for your skin right now is use a good sunscreen- this will prevent wrinkles and sun damage. Use it even on dark and gloomy days, not just when you’re out in the sun. It’s the best thing you can do for your skin. Also it’s good to have a good AHA (glycolic acid) product in your skincare routine!

You can try putting your hair in a loose bun, which is what I do. My hair is so long and I can’t imagine going to sleep without putting it up in a braid or a loose bun because my hair just gets everywhere haha :) I get hormonal breakouts too, what really helps me with that was cutting out dairy from my diet and taking a good omega3 supplement- this seriously saved my skin from those painful chin breakouts!

Being one who suffers from acne and only just taking full control of trying to get rid of it, I was 100% guilty of every single one of these! I’m still guilty of not washing my pillow cases and towels often enough..
