Nutrition was hands down, one of my favorite classes that I took in college.
If I were to do it all over again, I’d probably select it as my minor, instead of biology. I had this amazing professor who was an RD and always brought a bunch of food to class. The very first time I had almond milk, was actually in that class. Ever since then, I started paying closer attention to what I eat. I eventually made the acne-dairy connection and by cutting it from my diet completely, I healed my stubborn and very painful cystic acne. A few food-documentaries and books later, I decided to go plant-based.
The thing about being on a plant-based diet is that it takes a bit of planning. I don’t really like going out to eat anymore, because it’s a pain for me and I just refuse to eat out- especially if we’re taking chain restaurants. It’s not just about staying healthy or me being picky- a lot of the foods that I grew up eating (things that are fried or have a ton of dairy, butter, and meat in them) are just way too heavy for my sensitive stomach. In the past, if I did happen to eat out or if we ordered takeout, I had to make sure that I have Pepto and Tums by my side. Changing my eating habits took away all my digestive problems and even though it’s not always easy and especially annoying to my husband or friends whenever the dreaded question comes up (“soo.. what are we eating, you guys wanna order something?“) I wouldn’t go back.
There are a few things that I always make sure I have in my pantry, that I usually get on Amazon. Like Oats- which is my favorite way to do breakfast, I like making my banana breakfast bars because they’re easy to make the night before and you can just grab them on the go and I LOVE overnight oats. Carob powder is great for baking (or making a healthier version of hot chocolate) as is cacao powder. I’m also never without coconut palm sugar and coconut oil (duh!). Almond meal, coconut flour, millet– these are also dry ingredients that I always have around. Even though there are quite a few health foods stores around my area, I sometimes still find some products difficult to find, which is why I usually get most of them online. These are all great to have around when I want to make banana bread, vegan brownies, etc.
Raw Complexions Skintox* that goes into my smoothies- already talked about it in this post. When it comes to supplements, two that I take religiously are Omega-3 and Vitamin B12. I think that the best way to get in your vitamins is through a healthy, well-balanced diet and I like to believe that I do that. I can’t go without Omega-3 though as it helped me clear up my cystic acne and I swear that it improves my mood (some research proves that Omega-3 can be as effective in treating depression as Prozac). Right now, I’m still on the lookout for a non-fish supplement that will be just as effective as what I’m taking right now. So far I had no luck so I despite being on (mostly) plant-based diet, I still take fish oil supplements. These are the ones that I currently take and they’re made with sustainable salmon, so they’re better for the environment.
This is the only plant-based protein powder that my skin doesn’t seem to hate. Protein shakes aren’t something that I have every single day, but I like to have them after a tough workout or during busy mornings- I just mix it with almond milk and ice in my blender bottle (which, by the way, is the best little invention, ever).
Rescue Plus Sleep gummies. These have melatonin and taste like strawberries, they’re also natural and non-habit forming. I no longer have trouble falling or staying asleep (which has been a problem for me for YEARS after graduating and changing my crazy work and school schedule) but these are great to use on occasion when I’m having a stressful day and I’m really restless at night. Kind of a weird reason why I like these: they don’t give me strange dreams (I also love magnesium– it really helps you unwind after a long day and acts as a natural muscle relaxer). I always have some sort of sleep-aid in my nightstand, just in case, and a lot of the ones I’ve used in the past would give me really strange dreams. Like me borrowing money for makeup from a drug cartel. I kid you not. You can’t really get restful sleep when you dream about stupid shit like that. :)

November 5, 2016 at 2:52 pmMy diet isn’t completely plant based, but I’ve been making a big effort to clean it out of processed food and garbage. I empathize with having to carry Pepto or Tums when going out to eat – stomachs gets so sensitive once they don’t eat as much garbage.

November 5, 2016 at 3:02 pmThankfully I don’t have to carry those around anymore haha! :) I don’t even crave those “bad” foods. Except for cream-filled donuts, which I crave once or twice a year lol :) Wish I had a vegan bakery around where I live! :D

November 5, 2016 at 8:53 pmI really enjoyed reading this! Nutrition is so fascinating to me too, I would have to loved to have studied it at university. I’ve found that cutting dairy out of my diet helped clear up my acne as well. So many of the ingredients you listed are staples in my cupboard!

November 5, 2016 at 10:09 pmUGH I hate medicine dreams!!!! I flat out refuse to take NyQuil or DayQuil because both put me to sleep and it’s just too much with those dreams lol
I really need to get better at taking vitamins. I take the vanity vitamin (biotin) lol I used to take a multivitamin but it made me feel weird. I know I don’t get enough Omega-3 in my diet. And I’m going to need to pick up some cacao powder! Vanilla almond milk+ that sounds like some delicious hot chocolate!

November 8, 2016 at 11:55 amHaha yes! They’re the worst. I can’t get any rest that way. I used to take biotin too up until not too long ago. It’s so amazing for hair and nails, but it made my hair grow way too fast haha :)

November 6, 2016 at 3:51 pmGreat post! I also eat plant based. It has definately helped me a lot but I still have a lot of problems with my health, mostly my stomach and heartburn :(
Guess i have to lower the amount of fat too.

November 8, 2016 at 12:01 pmOh no, sorry to hear that, have you tried adding some ginger to your diet? I add it to my juices and it really helps with heartburn.

November 8, 2016 at 12:28 pmWell I really love ginger. Love drinking ginger tea and adding it in my food. Dont do it that often though. I’m gonna try putting it in my smoothies and just add more ginger in general. Cant hurt to try :) thank you!

November 6, 2016 at 4:16 pmI loved this post so much! I keep trying to make more healthy changes in my life (emotional and physical) so posts like this help so much! I wrote down quite few names of the products that you mentioned, especially the sleep one because I used to take other things that would also give me the craziest dreams, so I’d stop taking them. Thanks for sharing all of this!

November 8, 2016 at 12:03 pmSo happy to hear you liked this post Christine, thank you! I love those sleep supplements, they really help me. At the same time though, I try not to take them every single night. I find that having a nice sleep routine, unwinding, diffusing some essential oils help me calm down before sleep :)

November 6, 2016 at 5:37 pmHave you tried Flaxseed/Linseed as an alternative for your Omega-3? It’s plant-bases friendly. There’s also Algal Oil which a vegan source of Omega 3, 6 and 9.
Paula @ lifestylegleam.com
November 8, 2016 at 12:29 pmOh yes, I use Flaxseed, but plant-based sources of Omega-3 primarily contain ALA which then need to be converted to DHA and EPA. Animal sources have DHA and EPA and are easily absorbed and “work” immediately. All the ones I’ve tried so far just didn’t work as well. :( BUT I’ll definitely look into Algal Oil as it seems to have DHA, yay!! Thanks so much for the recommendation! :)

November 8, 2016 at 6:26 amI’m in the process of cleaning out my diet (sits here eating biscuits haha) but I really want to get into eating Oats, I’ve tried them before and haven’t really got into them, but hey, here’s to another try!! Have a lovely week :)

November 8, 2016 at 12:32 pmHaha :) I think with oats you need to know how to dress them up a little if you don’t like them plain. They’re great for baking or making healthier cookies, treats, etc. I love adding some cacao and fruit to my oats- add some vanilla milk some nuts or granola for a little crunchiness- soo good!

November 8, 2016 at 10:47 amGoing fully plant based sounds kinda scary :) How long did it take your body to adapt it fully? Since you don’t consume meat, how do you get your protein needs? I don’t know much about the plant based diet, that’s why sorry for asking so many questions :p
Sleep gummies sounds great, I think I need them in my life :)

November 8, 2016 at 12:40 pmIt’s not as scary as it seems, for me it was super easy. I was never much of a meat eater, to start with. There so many possibilities with plant-based eating, it’s not like eating salads all the time. I have stuffed sweet potatoes, pizza, veggie and rice bowls, sushi rolls (made with avo or cucumber), etc.
I don’t think my body needed any time to adapt to it. I just kept feeling better and better with each day, you start feeling less and less bloated, you have more energy and sleep better. For protein I eat beans, legumes and have them with some grains like brown rice.
To be honest, the worst part is, like I said, going out or during holidays when visiting family, etc. Whenever I say “Oh I can’t eat meat or I can’t eat that” I always get the “you’re so skinny you shouldn’t be dieting, just eat something” but it’s not about losing weight at all. it’s about the fact that I don’t want to be up all night dying of heartburn or upset stomach haha ;) I’d say that dealing with that is the most difficult part of a plant-based diet. :)
