What is your biggest challenge when it comes to practicing self-care? For me, it’s always been embracing self-care practices for the mind. Caring for your body is much easier than caring for your mind and spirit. We often avoid facing our feelings, fears, and emotions. Why? Well, because facing them can feel very uncomfortable, even intimidating. Other times, we simply don’t want to deal with some of the things we feel. I know that I don’t always love being alone with my thoughts and feelings and in the past, I’d get lost in distractions and noise, just to avoid facing them. And, to be honest, it’s not all that difficult to do. Our days are filled with noise, deadlines, chores, always being in a hurry. We also often overcommit, sometimes we refuse to let things go. Keeping all those thoughts and emotions bottled up is a defense mechanism, but sooner or later, they always end up pouring out. As I mentioned in this post, this is something that I want to let go of this year. One of my goals is to come back to the place of peace and mental clarity. To do that, I’m revisiting some of the self-care […]

Beauty Supplements: Getting that Glow From the Inside Out The following content includes referral links and/or PR samples/gifted products (*). Read my disclosure policy for more info. A good skincare routine, religious use of sunscreen, eating well and staying hydrated. All this will go a long way if you’re after that glowing, healthy complexion. Is it always enough? Nope. Not always. Sometimes, like when dealing with stubborn acne, you also have to add a prescription treatment or certain beauty supplements to the mix. The truth is that most of us probably don’t actually have the need for supplements. If you’re already getting everything you need from your diet, then taking them might make no difference at all. If, however, you are under a lot of stress, have a hectic schedule, your diet isn’t well-balanced or you take certain medications, it’s a different story. All these factors can also affect your skin. That kind of happens to be my story at the moment. As I’m slowly getting back to my healthy lifestyle and a plant-based diet, I reach for a little help from beauty supplements. The easiest way to get in a daily dose of that good, healthy stuff, is in my smoothies. […]

I’ve had a complicated relationship with sleep probably for as long as I can remember. The art of actually getting that beauty sleep is something I had to learn and try to master over the years. Growing up, I suffered from a lot of nighttime aches and pains in my joints- especially during bad weather. I’d call for my mom, as you do, and make her rub countless tubs of Vicks VapoRub on my legs and arms. Once the Harry Potter book series started coming out, I’d spend most nights hidden under the covers, flashlight in hand, trying to get through “just one more chapter” before finally falling asleep. College? I’m not entirely sure that I got any actual, good night’s sleep during those years. Like, at all. The thing is, like most people, I love sleep. I really, really do. Despite my deep love for it, I’ve always witnessed this strange phenomenon occur, when the more physically and mentally exhausted I feel, the more difficult I find it to fall and stay asleep. So yes, to me, sleep has become something into which I […]

Getting Your Mind Right: How To Do a Mental Cleanse “Detox” seems to be a bit of a buzzword these days. We constantly hear and read about countless diets, cleansing kits and “detox spas” that are said to have all these endless health benefits. The truth is that our bodies are already equipped with a detoxification system that can defend itself pretty well, as long as you’re in good general health. The idea of a mental cleanse or a “detox” is the same as with cleansing or detoxing your body: it’s getting rid of and eliminating certain “bad” things. Things like limiting beliefs, negative emotions, and habits that do not serve you. The thing is that when it comes to a mental cleanse, you have to put in some effort. Just like your lifestyle and the foods you eat can either fuel or limit your body, feeding your mind with positive thoughts and engaging in good habits and keeping it healthy is just as important. Most of the time, we are too busy to properly deal with our emotions and often just “put” them aside. We’re also not always aware of where our energy goes. Doing a mental cleanse is […]

When things get messy, busy, hectic or stressful during the day, most of us think to ourselves “I can’t wait for this day to finally be over!” Stress and a sudden feeling of overwhelm most of the time come unexpectedly. That is one of the reasons why I am such a huge believer in rituals and routines. Both morning and nighttime. I love both the very beginning and the end of the day because I find them both incredibly peaceful. Those morning and nighttime rituals are keys to my keeping my sanity when everything else seems to get out of control. For a lot of us, nighttime/bedtime is the only time of day we get just for ourselves, too. The time where the distractions and the noise die down for a while- which makes it an excellent opportunity for a few self-care rituals. NIGHTTIME SELF-CARE RITUALS 1. BRAIN DUMPING If there has been a lot going on during your day, come bedtime you might find yourself feeling like your brain just will.not.stop. You worry, you play out different scenarios in your head, you overthink and the next thing you know, it’s 3 am and you’re thinking whether you should even […]
