What’s in Beau Monde?
Spice Island lists ingredients salt, dextrose (sugar), onion, celery seed and silicon dioxide. I use a simple blend of staple spices.
- Salt – A simple table salt works well.
- White Granulated Sugar – The sweetness of the added sugar in this blend is what makes it so unique.
- Onion Powder – The onion powder and celery combine for a vibrant combination here!
- Celery Seed – Substitute 2x celery powder or eliminate salt and substitute celery salt 1:1 with celery seed, if needed.
Note: Most recipes for Beau Monde seasoning blends and substitutes include nutmeg and cinnamon. The original Spice Islands blend does not have hints of nutmeg or cinnamon and they are not included in the ingredient list. I tested my beau monde seasoning recipe side by side with the original to perfect the flavor profile.

Very glad I came upon your site, Julie. Many years ago I made a vegetable dip with store-bought Beau Monde: one half mayo, one half sour cream, dash of Worcestershire Sauce, liberal amount of Beau Monde. Blend well & serve with a cudite platter. I don’t recall if I added anything extra but it was the Beau Monde that made the dip so delicious! I now live in England and the spice is not available on the store shelves so I decided to make it to add to my enormous spice inventory. Many thanks for bringing it to me once again.
Oh no! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! That sounds like a delicious dip! I would love to know how much you use and try it myself!
If I wanted to include MSG into this recipe, how much would I use?
Hello Fran,
We’ve never tested this recipe with added MSG, so we can’t say for sure. Did you know that the original (trademarked) Spice Islands Beau Monde doesn’t contain MSG either? I think that’s a common misconception.
I hope you enjoy this recipe!
Julie
You left out the dextrose and silicon dioxide. ๐
Hi William!
Those are just fillers and preservatives, not necessary for flavoring!
I hope you enjoy this seasoning blend – it’s so good.

Lol, what?? โBeau Monde means ‘the world of high society and fashionโ. Beau Monde obviously translates to beautiful world. I read recently that recipe bloggers have to write stories of a certain length in order to get ad revenue, but seriously, are you just making stuff up to use more words?
Hi Cadence,
Feel free to look up the meaning in any dictionaries available to you- that is the noted definition of the term, not a direct translation. We are just adding a little background to the post to help guide readers and home cooks.
Hope you have a wonderful week,
Julie
