6 Lip Products Totally Worth The Splurge

mac-lipstick-collection

How much are you willing to spend on a lip product?

I have some expensive lip balms and lipsticks in my collection, but you will never, never see me spend $90.00 on a lipstick (looking at you Christian Louboutin). They say never say never.. but…. here I am, saying it: never.

On the other hand, though, I’d never think that I’d get so attached to a lip balm that comes with a hefty price tag of $37.00. I guess some things are just worth splurging on.

MAC LIPSTICK ($17)

MAC lipsticks are definitely amongst my favorites and I love splurging on a new one every once in a while. I love pretty much every single one of them I’ve ever bought. The colors are always pigmented, the formulas are creamy, long-lasting and the packaging is simple. These come in several different finishes: Amplified, Cremesheen, Frost, Glaze, Lustre, Satin and Matte. Matte formulas are my favorite- I love Ruby Woo, Velvet Teddy, Whirl, Taupe. These are $17 each (last year they used to be $16, hope that MAC won’t raise the price again) and you can also get one for free if you bring six empty MAC containers to any freestanding MAC store.

MAKE UP FOR EVER LIP LINE PERFECTOR ($19)

This might as well be called “the only lip liner you’ll ever need.” It’s a clear lip liner that will prevent any lipstick from feathering and “bleeding” out. It has a creamy, comfortable formula and texture that fills in fine lines and hydrates the skin. I love using this with bright pinks and reds because it really helps the color stay put. It’s also pretty long-lasting (your lipstick will fade before it’ll feather out) so it’s also my go-to product for any special occasions.

CHANEL ROUGE ALLURE VELVET LUMINOUS MATTE LIPSTICKS ($37)

I have four of these lipsticks and their formula is just incredible. The colors are bright, vibrant, pigmented, the finish isn’t entirely matte- it’s sort of illuminating, but a little matte at the same time. Very unique finish. They’re very hydrating, which sometimes means that they travel quite a bit once applied, so lip liner is definitely a must with these. I love that the velvety formula of these doesn’t accentuate any dry bits.

best lip products

DIOR CR`EME DE ROSE ($28)

Hands down one of my favorite Dior products. Prior to trying this many years ago, I couldn’t stand the smell of rose in cosmetics, and now, I’m a huge fan. This balm smoothes, slightly plumps and hydrates lips. It’s rich and creamy and adds a slight rosy glow to my lips.

MAC PREP + PRIME LIP ($16.50)

This is probably the only lip primer that I actually loved. It takes a few minutes to set and dry, but once you follow with your lipstick you will not believe how long it’ll last. It’s color-free, smoothes and refines lips but the main reason why I love it is that it turns any lipstick into a long-lasting one. I kind of feel like this primer and the MUFE Lip Line Perfector have a very similar formula and they work really nicely together.

CHANEL ROUGE COCO BAUME ($37.00)

Where do I start with this one? Let me just say that I suffer from chronically dry lips and this is one of my favorite lip balms. I first bought it a few years ago and when the sales lady started telling me how wonderful it is, I thought she was full of crap. She wasn’t. Right now I take a bunch of meds that make my lips and my mouth very dry so I apply and re-apply lip balm throughout the day like a maniac. I always keep coming back to this balm. It’s very lightweight yet really nourishing and hydrating. I used to buy this even back in the college days when all of my money went on books and tuition and I couldn’t really afford to spend money on things like makeup. That’s how much I love this balm.

Which one do you put on first when using together, the Mac Prep & Prime or the MUFE Lip Line Perfecter? I think I am going to give both of them a try!

I do the liner first then add the primer, let it sit for a few minutes and then go in with my lipstick.

That MUFE Lip Line Perfector… do you know if it’s any better/worse than Urban Decay’s Ozone 24/7 Lip Pencil? I have the Ozone one, but recently, my grandmother was asking me for a lip liner recommendation to keep her lip color from feathering at her age. I was going to recommend either a neutral-colored lip pencil from MUFE or UD… but didn’t realize they BOTH make these clear lip primers. I wonder what would be better hmm…

No idea, I haven’t tried the one from UD so I wouldn’t know. I think that the UD one does look a little bit thicker so it might be easier to use for your grandma!

I love MAC lipsticks too but in Canada, the price recently went up to $20. They used to be $18. If you’re looking for a great but less expensive lip balm, I’d definitely recommend the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream (the lip balm version comes in a little pot). I use it every night and it’s WONDERFUL.

I love MAC and Marc Jacobs lipsticks. High end lipsticks do feel very different. I love the colors too. Its very hard to find drugstore dupes for them. I really want to try Tom Ford lipsticks too. Great post x

I think that NYX is the only drugstore brand that really impressed me a lot. I think high end lippies tend to be more pigmented and more long-lasting.

I love the MAC prep and prime lips, I also love their matte lipstick formula. My favorite luxury lip product is hands down Tom Ford, but I may just check out the matte Chanel formula. It looks promising.

Oh man, I don’t think I can spend so much on a lipstick when there are so many great ones that are really affordable. The most I’ve spent on a lip product wa sthe Fresh Sugar lip balm and that isn’t even a real lipstick.

I was applying lip balm right as you mentioned you have chronically dry lips and I totally nodded my head in agreement haha. I’m with you, girl! My lips get pretty dry if I don’t take care of them so I really want to try the Chanel balm. And 100% with you on MAC lipsticks ;).

I love MAC lipstick as much as the next girl-but there’s something about Chanel, isn’t there?! Beautiful lip products in general. I also totally love NARS Audacious lipsticks-again, a hefty price tag, but maaaan the staying power and pigment are fab! And they are so comfortable!

I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I’ve never owned a MAC lipstick! I’ve heard people rave about them for years but I rarely go to a department store to purchase makeup. I need to make a trip and pick one up one of these days!

I’m totally adding the Chanel lip balm to my wishlist. I have tried many many lip balms and I’m still hunting for my holy grail. The best I’ve come across so far is the YSL Top Secrets Lip Re-Plumping Concentrate which costs $50 over here. Ouch!

Such a great post! MAC lipsticks are my go-to as well. I am also intrigued by the MUFE lip liner! Chanel lipliner in Nude (very inaccurately named color!) was my “worth the splurge” product but it’s been discontinued so I am very selectively using up the one I have left!

I wouldn’t splurge as much on a lip balm, haha, but I can go for an expensive lipstick if is worth it but I’m with you on having a limit, how much better can a $90 lipstick be from those that are already high quality but cost less then half price?? :) x

The Make Up Forever Lip Line Perfector seems like a very handy product! The Chanel lipsticks sound dreamy, but my heart belongs to the Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipsticks right now..they have a slightly waxy texture so they stay put, and they’re hydrating and intensely pigmented, so definitely worth the splurge in my opinion! :)

    Beautiful photos, as always!
